Here is the updated spreadsheet and the JPEGS for glac, emeso, and pied --
these are using the 1000-m exclusion radius.

Let's try your last solution which yielded 30 primaries but no
alternatives. We really don't have any use for alternatives anyway since
the sites have already been sampled.

Can you send me an updated spreadsheet?

Hi Mike.

Using an exclusion radius of 500-m also yielded less than 30 sites for
glac, pied, and emeso.

I tried rerunning the selection with fewer alternate sites and an
exclusion radius of 1000-m. For glacial and emeso, I was able to get 30
primary points and 1 alternate. For pied, I was able to get 30 primaries
and no alternates. Do you want to go with this solution? If so, I'll
make the spreadsheet of PS IDs, geodatabase, and jpegs for you. Attached
are the report files so you can get an idea:

OK, let's try shortening the distance criteria to 0.5 km for the 3
aquifers with less than 30 wells; pied, glac, and emeso. How does that
sound?

I think you are right that there are fewer than 30 wells in some aquifers
because of the 1000 km distance. Maybe we could decrease the distance to
try to get more wells. Even though all the wells are selected randomly, I
think it would not be good to select from the 2nd or 3rd choice wells
because then the distance criteria we used would not be valid for all
wells. I don't mind trying a different distance criteria, if you suggest
one.

Terri:

From the Excel file it looks like several of the PAs do not have 30 wells
selected where CHOSEN=1. Pied has only 18; glacial 25, and emeso 24. It
seems like there would have been enough systems in each PA to select 30
but maybe that was not true considering the 1km distance criteria.

Should I select some of the CHOSEN=2 to obtain a network of 30 systems in
each PA? Or do you have another suggestion?

Terri:

This is great. If it's not too much trouble can you make the jpg's? I
would like to send them out to the group to give them an idea of where the
systems are located.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Mike.

I put the files from the random site selection using a 1,000 m exclusion
radius and the list of public supply wells with 3 or more yrs of MTBE data
into ftp:
ftp://ftpint.usgs.gov/private/er/il/urbana/NAWQA/simplerandomselect05302008
.zip

The files have pretty much the same file names as previously except I
didn't include the jpgs this time. If you want the jpgs, let me know and
I'll make them. I am sorry I didn't get this to you yesterday. I had 2
new student helpers start yesterday and I spent most of the day helping
them.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Terri:

I made a mistake in the selection of sites for MTBE trends. I forgot to
limit the selection of systems to only those with 3 or more years of MTBE
data. How difficult would it be for you to rerun the selection AML? I
hope it wouldn't be too much trouble. I really need to get this right!

Just let me know, I can send you new data files for selection.

Thanks,

Mike
